Demonstrating to your employees that they are valued is one of the most important overarching themes of Employee Appreciation Day, which falls on Friday, March 5th this year. Employees are the backbone of companies and should be shown appreciation year-round, but this day is specifically dedicated to appreciating and supporting them. This Employee Appreciation Day will be celebrated differently due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is essential, now more than ever, to celebrate our employees. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of 5 ways you can show employees you care this Employee Appreciation Day. 

Padlet Appreciation Board

Padlet is an online notice board that can be used for multiple purposes, including a kudos board. And what better way to show employees appreciation than to allow managers and peers to leave messages shouting out employees for their awesome work. HR can create a padlet and allow employees to leave notes recognizing others across the organization. HR can then randomly assign everyone a small list of co-workers to give kudos to, ensuring inclusivity, and share some of the comments that were posted. Simple activities like this can go a long way and leave employees feeling valued and appreciated.

Virtual Water Cooler

A great way to incorporate this into Employee Appreciation Day could involve taking an hour on March 5th to have a water cooler meeting with the company to enjoy time in a more relaxed environment (the water cooler can be split into breakout rooms by department for larger companies). Since the holiday falls on a Friday this year, the virtual water cooler could be scheduled for the end of the workday and involve a happy hour or other virtual activity to celebrate employees’ achievements. 

Chair Yoga

Yoga is a great way to de-stress while also having fun in a group setting. If the last year has taught us anything, it is to take care of ourselves and our mental and physical health. Chair Yoga can be conducted virtually and acts as a great self-care activity to do with employees. Last year, the team at EverythingBenefits participated in chair yoga with OM Office Yoga and the activity received praise and positive feedback. The benefits of chair yoga or even a brief meditation can positively affect stress, a study conducted by the Journal of Functional Morphology and Kinesiology found a 95% confidence interval in favor of using yoga to aid in work-related stress.Chair Yoga

COVID Care Package

A care package can include a variety of items, and with the ongoing pandemic, it might just be the highlight of someone’s week! And the good news is, it doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are some items you may consider including in your care package:

  • A hand-written card to employees from management or leadership.
  • A mask with the company logo on it, this gift has utility and serves as free publicity when it’s worn!
  • A creative, yet thoughtful, way to fill care packages can include a favorite snack, a coffee mug (a necessity as the National Coffee Association found that the average American coffee drinker drinks just over 3 cups a day), or a journal for employees to keep a record of achievements to look back on when the going gets tough. 

The list of items to include goes on as long as you’d like, get creative and make it personal!

Family Fun

Since transitioning to a remote work environment, many employees have had to adjust to having children at home involved in virtual schooling and spouses working from home as well. There have been many sacrifices made since the pandemic started and the virtual work began; whether it involved creating makeshift home offices or implementing family school and work schedules to prevent noise on a zoom call. Human Resources Today proposes that Employee Appreciation Day include a fun activity for your employees’ children such as arts and crafts or a game. This is a great way to have your children meet your coworkers and their children in a fun and engaging way. For employees without children, they can still participate in activities like adult coloring books or drawing contests. The creativity and competitiveness should prove to be an amusing and enjoyable time.
